Cameron Hillebrand was 16 years old when he learned about the value of life insurance. Life changed in an instant when his mom died from the flu, leaving behind a husband and seven children whom she homeschooled. She did have a small life insurance policy, but it wasn’t enough to cover expenses such as childcare. It was Cameron who had to focus on caring for his younger siblings and household chores and less on his studies.
“Buying sufficient life insurance is one of the most important decisions a person could ever make,” says Cameron. Since then his dad has increased his life insurance policy.
Life Happens’ annual Life Lessons Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students who are struggling financially due to a parent dying with little to no life insurance. Thanks to supporters of the program such as Swiss Re, who sponsored Cameron’s $10,000 scholarship, he can now focus on his Mechanical Engineering major without financial worry.
This year, Life Happens awarded a record total of $230,000 in scholarships to 29 deserving students. Since the beginning of the program, Life Happens has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to over 500 students.
These students know firsthand of the need for life insurance because of the financial challenges they faced. In most cases, it seems their mom or dad did everything right with one significant exception. They didn’t have a plan to provide for their kids if something were to happen to them.
Although these students have faced devastating losses, they are remarkable in their determination. They understand how important education is and are striving to obtain a college degree. And while they learned the hard way, these students understand how important it is to protect your family should the unthinkable happen. It’s also a stark reminder that no one is promised a tomorrow—the best time to buy life insurance is now. Although life insurance can’t bring back a loved one, it can provide a measure of financial security. That’s the message Life Happens tries to communicate through these stories.
At the end of the day, we must never lose sight of our fundamental objective… to use these stories to get more Americans the coverage they need to protect their loved ones. Share these motivational Life Lessons videos and flyers with your clients and prospects.
