You’re at a party and are introduced to someone new. The conversation quickly turns to 'so what do you do for a living?' No matter how hard they try their eyes glaze over when you respond that you work in the insurance industry. Your next few sentences are met with polite head nodding but you know you've lost them. Now imagine you then have to explain reinsurance!
February is Insurance Careers Month and collectively, our industry is using the month to break through that perception. The movement is aimed at collectively spreading the word that insurance is the career trifecta: It’s stable, rewarding, limitless. Those of us in the industry know this to be true. How can we help illustrate that story for students and those entering the workforce?
We have the stories to tell and examples that would show our industry as a dynamic and exciting place to work. Particularly now at a time for the industry that's so often tagged 'the age of disruption'. We're just not marketing ourselves well enough.
What other industries can lay claim to working closely with drones, driverless cars and 3D printing while at the same time coming up with solutions to make the societies and homes we live in more resilient to natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes and floods. If that's not enough, we even develop and price policies for space travel!
At Swiss Re we have data scientists, engineers, seismologists, meteorologists, lawyers, actuaries, technical accountants and many more specialty professionals – about 11,000 in fact – all over the world. Yes, we have very different backgrounds, but we all play an important role in making our company what it is today.
Shortly I'll be speaking at a CPCU/Reinsurance Under 40's event and one of my goals is to inspire those already in the industry and make clear there are exciting career opportunities there for them.
But even before that age we have to do a better job of planting the seed in the next generation's mind that insurance can be a viable, interesting and rewarding career path. The industry is embracing technology and social media which is a start but as individual's we all have a role as ambassadors.
I'm genuinely enthused by what I do. Are you? We do an excellent job at selling the value of the products that we offer but now it's time we do a better job selling the value of a career in this industry.
